Former NBA player Jason Collins faces unfortunate news

Jason Collins played 13 seasons in the NBA, from 2001 through 2014. A first-round pick out of Stanford, he debuted with the New Jersey Nets and later played for the Grizzlies, Timberwolves, Hawks, Celtics and Wizards. Collins finished his career as a member of the Brooklyn Nets and became a respected locker-room presence known for his defense and physical play.

This week Collins revealed devastating health news. He told ESPN he has Stage 4 glioblastoma, a fast-growing and aggressive brain cancer. The tumor was first noted after a CT scan at UCLA in late summer. A biopsy confirmed glioblastoma. Collins described rapid onset symptoms, including short-term memory loss and trouble concentrating. Doctors warned that without treatment he could have had only weeks to months.

Collins is fighting back. He said Men’s Journal, “I have Stage 4 glioblastoma, one of the deadliest forms of brain cancer. It came on incredibly fast.” He is undergoing targeted chemotherapy and radiation. Because his tumor resists standard chemotherapy, he is also receiving experimental treatment at a clinic in Singapore. Collins said the approach is meant to buy time for a personalized immunotherapy treatment.

Collins made history off the court too. In 2013 he became the first active male athlete in the four major U.S. pro leagues to come out as gay. He later married longtime partner Brunson Green in May. Collins has asked for privacy but promised to fight. “We aren’t going to sit back and let this cancer kill me without giving it a hell of a fight,” he said.

Fans, former teammates and the NBA have rallied with support. Collins’ honesty has long inspired many. Now the basketball world is sending thoughts and strength to him and Green during this difficult time.
