Liverpool were unable to sign Marc Guehi on deadline day earlier this year. The Reds had agreed a £35million fee with Crystal Palace, and Guehi even underwent a medical. However, the deal collapsed at the last minute because Palace could not find a suitable replacement. Brighton & Hove Albion’s Igor Julio opted to join West Ham United on loan, forcing Guehi to remain at Selhurst Park.
Liverpool’s problems in central defence have been stark this season. Ibrahima Konate’s form has dipped, despite being a key player in helping the Reds win the Premier League title last term. Following the collapse of his Liverpool move, Guehi said, “God has a plan for me.”
He told Sky Sports: “I think everyone has this perception that it was difficult. Actually, it wasn’t difficult. It wasn’t difficult at all. Because when you’re focused on what’s the most important thing, it becomes easy. I know that God has a plan for me, and whatever that plan will be, will come into fruition at some point. But, the goal and the focus has always been playing football and trying to do the best I can. And fortunately for me, I get to do it with people like Max.”
Crystal Palace head coach Oliver Glasner has already confirmed that Guehi has informed the club he does not intend to sign a new contract. Liverpool remain interested in signing him. With his contract expiring at the end of the season, Guehi is set to become a free agent, which is expected to attract interest from several top clubs.
Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich have all been linked with a potential move and can negotiate a pre-contract from 1 January. According to Sky Germany, Bayern remain keen on signing the 25-year-old in the summer. From January 1, Max Eberl plans a personal meeting with Guehi, while Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Liverpool continue to be in the race for his signature.
