Liverpool face Brighton & Hove Albion at Anfield in the Premier League on Saturday. The Reds were denied all three points by a stoppage-time equaliser in their trip to Leeds last weekend, but bounced back with a crucial victory over Inter Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
The win at the San Siro came without Mohamed Salah, who was left out of the squad following his outburst after being benched at Elland Road. As a result, the build-up to the Brighton clash has been dominated by speculation over whether Salah will be recalled by Arne Slot for one final game before heading off to the Africa Cup of Nations.
Liverpool currently sit on just 23 points and have conceded 24 goals in the Premier League this season, the worst start by a reigning champion in both metrics after 15 games since Leicester City in 2016-17 (16 points, 26 conceded).
Defensive frailties have been a recurring issue throughout 2025. Liverpool have conceded 48 goals in 35 Premier League games this calendar year, with only two previous occasions where they shipped 50+ goals in a year – 2012 (51) and 2014 (52).
Brighton, meanwhile, have been inconsistent this season. The Seagulls won their last away game against Nottingham Forest but followed it up by taking just one point from a possible six in home fixtures against Aston Villa and West Ham.
