Why Arne Slot dropping Mohamed Salah for Liverpool vs Brighton would be his biggest call yet - opinion

It is not yet clear whether Mohamed Salah will be a part of Liverpool’s squad in his final game before AFCON.

Arne Slot has been bold with his team selection in recent weeks, although his decision to bench Salah did cause the Egyptian to publicly call him out.

The situation is still yet to be fully resolved, with Slot hinting that an apology is needed first, but whether that has occurred is not public knowledge.

There is a strong suggestion that he will be left out of the squad to face Brighton on Saturday as well, which would mean the winger would have played his last game for the club if he does leave in January.

Not starting him against Brighton would be one of his biggest calls yet, though, with it being safe to say Liverpool would stand a better chance if he does start.

Mohamed Salah’s record against Brighton is phenomenal

Salah’s record against most clubs is pretty impressive, with the winger one of the most consistent players the league has seen.

His goals have been pivotal in Liverpool’s success, and even though they have dried up as of late, there is still a player inside somewhere.

Against Brighton, he has a pretty phenomenal record too, with the 33-year-old registering 17 goal involvements in 18 games against the Seagulls.

The only game he did not get a goal involvement against them came in the League Cup last season, although in fairness, he did only play 19 minutes.

17 starts, 17 contributions shows exactly why putting him into the starting XI might have to happen against a side in decent form, although it would mean squashing any issues Slot and Salah have rather swiftly.

Mohamed Salah’s reaction at Anfield will be a telling sign

Whether or not Salah is in the squad or not for the Brighton game, it is highly likely that he will be at Anfield either way, with his parents even set to be there too.

If that is not a telling sign of what the future holds, then his reaction after the game will be, with it probable that he will spend a lot of time clapping and waving to the fans.

The cameras will be on him and he will know that, so a dramatic reaction could suggest the end is in sight, something that would be an incredibly sad way to go.

Players like him deserve a proper send-off and not a quiet exit mid-season, although based on the way things are going, this is becoming increasingly likely.
