Mohamed Salah played no part in Liverpool’s 1-0 away victory over Inter Milan at the San Siro in the Champions League on Tuesday night. Questions over whether the Reds’ third-highest goalscorer in history will return to the squad are expected to dominate the build-up.
Salah was left out of the 19-man party that travelled to Italy following his explosive interview after last Saturday’s 3-3 Premier League draw at Leeds United. After being named as a substitute for the third consecutive match, the Egyptian claimed he was being “thrown under the bus” by Liverpool and said his relationship with head coach Arne Slot had broken down. Slot later suggested Salah might need to initiate a conversation to resolve the issue.
Slot said after the win over Inter Milan: “You say everyone makes mistakes in life, so the first thing should be, does the player think he’s made a mistake as well? “I haven’t said I’m not going to talk to him. And the next question is should the initiative come from me or from him. Now that’s another question to answer.”
It remains unclear whether he will feature in Saturday’s Premier League clash with Brighton & Hove Albion at Anfield. Following his exclusion, Salah posted a cryptic image of himself training in the state-of-the-art gym facilities at the AXA Centre on Tuesday. Salah has once again posted a cryptic image of himself training alone at the gym on his Instagram story ahead of the Brighton clash.
Despite a difficult start to Liverpool’s Premier League title defence, Tuesday’s win over Inter has lifted Slot’s side to ninth place in their Champions League group with 12 points after six games. In the Premier League, Liverpool sit 10th in the table, just three points behind Crystal Palace, who currently occupy the final Champions League qualification spot for next season.
