Chelsea have beaten off competition from Manchester City and Manchester United to sign Mohamed Zongo, a Burkina Faso youth international.
They had emerged as the favourites to acquire his services, after his performances at the under-17 World Cup last month, which was held in Qatar.
The plan initially is for Zongo to join sister club Strasbourg in Ligue 1, with the prospect of eventually making the switch to Stamford Bridge if he continues at his current rate of development. FIFA rules mean that he will not be able to complete his move to Europe until he turns 18 anyway.
He is a left-footed attacking midfielder who is athletic, strong, and capable of playing in several positions.
The acquisition of Zongo is the latest example of BlueCo’s transfer and busness strategy which is focused on the identification and recruitment of the best young talent, rather than the buying of ready-made proven stars.
