Florian Wirtz may now be questioning his decision to join Liverpool this summer. That’s according to Didi Hamann.
He’s been speaking on the Sky programme “Triple – the Hagedorn Football Talk.” His comments have been relayed by Weltfussball.
Wirtz is continuing to find his way at Anfield at this moment in time after a poor start to life at the club following his big money move from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer.
He arrived with a big reputation, as one of the rising stars of European football, but is yet to find his feet at Liverpool. To date, he’s managed five assists in 20 games in all competitions, but three of them have come in the Champions League. He is yet to score in any competition and has just one assist in 14 in the league.
There has been some signs of improvement of late as Arne Slot has changed his system, and, interestingly, dropped Mohamed Salah. But the reality is that Wirtz has not been anywhere near the level Liverpool were expecting when they signed him this summer.
The Reds beat Bayern Munich and Manchester City to that signing. Hamann thinks, at least for the moment, Wirtz will be questioning his choice.
“As things stand, he’s misjudged the situation,” he said.
“He obviously had a difficult start; there was mourning at the club after the tragic death of Diogo Jota. But it’s almost Christmas now, and he hasn’t scored a goal or decided a single game. (He’s) barely made any impact.”
Liverpool player may not suit Premier League
Florian Wirtz Liverpool
FRANKFURT, GERMANY – 22 OCTOBER, 2025: Florian Wirtz – UEFA Champions League, match SG Eintracht Frankfurt vs Liverpool FC at Deutsche Bank Park.
German legend Oliver Kahn has also been watching Wirtz’s struggles. He, though, believes it could end up being a useful period for the midfielder.
“Liverpool have bought a lot of new players, then there’s the whole Mohamed Salah saga,” he added.
“And the Premier League doesn’t really suit his style of play. It’s even more about athleticism and physicality.
“Going through a season like that can make you even stronger. And if he establishes himself there, he’ll be taking two steps at once.”
