Everything you need to know about the indirect pitch Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah received from MLS boss
Mohamed Salah is currently facing an unsettled future at Liverpool following a deterioration in his relationship with manager Arne Slot. This became clear when the forward gave a shock interview in the mixed zone after the 3-3 draw with Leeds United, where he said there is "no relationship" between him and Slot.
The Egyptian international has recently been dropped from the starting eleven for multiple important Premier League fixtures. His interview saw him be completely omitted from the squad entirely for the Champions League match against Inter Milan, which further fuelled transfer rumours surrounding his position at Anfield.
Salah also suggested the next match, against Brighton, might be his last for the Merseyside club. He is scheduled to leave for the Africa Cup of Nations shortly afterwards, making his return for the second half of the season unclear.
A move to the Saudi Pro League has always been viewed as the most probable next step whenever his time with Liverpool comes to an end. This destination would guarantee him an exceptionally high monetary contract, attracting much global attention.
However, Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States has recently emerged as a significant alternative option to the Middle East. Reports suggest that a transfer across the Atlantic Ocean cannot now be entirely ruled out by the player’s representatives.
A key factor in the MLS interest is the new San Diego FC team, which is co-owned by the Egyptian-British billionaire, Mohamed Mansour. This ownership connection could make the Californian side a particularly favourable choice for Salah and his family.
The MLS Commissioner, Don Garber, has publicly appealed to Salah to snub the Saudi millions and move instead to North America. Garber believes the league's growing prominence, proven by the successful signings of legends, makes it an attractive proposition.
Garber pointed towards the recent impact of world-class players like Lionel Messi and Thomas Muller joining the league as persuasive examples. He suggested that Salah should contact these footballers to hear about their positive experiences in the American top flight.
The MLS chief said: "Obviously, if [Salah] ever decides to come to Major League Soccer, we’d welcome him with open arms. I’d say he should reach out to Leo [Messi] and reach out to Thomas Muller and see how happy they’ve been and how successful they’ve been and how much they’ve really embraced being in Major League Soccer."
He added: "I’ve seen some rumours about Mo Salah. We very much believe in the sanctity of a contract; that’s an American business dynamic. Mo’s under contract to Liverpool, people we know. It’s a great team."
