Pompey's relegation rivals linked with Everton defender as Man City man backed to shine in…

The latest transfer talk from across the Championship as Sheffield Wednesday are linked with an Everton defender.

While Pompey take stock of what they need during the January transfer window, Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly considering a move for a Premier League defender as they look to move on from a difficult first half of the season.

With financial difficulties and the disastrous impact of Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership plaguing the opening four months of the campaign and leading to points deductions now totalling 18 points, the Owls are now all but certain to drop back into League One - but that has not stopped the Blues’s relegation rivals planning a recruitment drive for next month.

Football Insider have claimed the Hillsborough outfit have ‘expressed an interest’ in securing the services of Everton’s Reece Welch as he enters the final six months of his current Toffees deal. The 22-year-old has made two senior appearances for the Premier League club, after making his debut in an FA Cup fifth-round tie against Boreham Wood in March 2022, before appearing in a Carabao Cup meeting with Fleetwood Town five months later.

Welch is yet to make a Premier League appearance but has been an unused substitute on 16 occasions - and that tally includes being named on the bench by David Moyes for a home defeat against Newcastle United and a win at Bournemouth over the last fortnight.

The report suggests Everton believe a loan move in the Championship is the ‘next ideal move’ for the academy product after he spent temporary stints with Forest Green Rovers and Belgian club KMSK Deinze earlier in his career. That could open the door for Wednesday to make a move.

There was great excitement at Middlesbrough when the North East outfit completed the season-long loan addition of Manchester City youngster Sverre Nypan just a month after the Norway international joined the Premier League giants from Rosenberg.

At the age of just 18-years-old, the highly-rated midfielder forged a reputation as one of the most exciting talents in European football and that brought links with a number of clubs across the continent. After scoring 14 goals and providing 11 assists in 70 senior appearances for Rosenberg, Manchester City won the race to secure his services during the summer and immediately sent him on loan to Boro.

After showing flashes of his unquestionable potential during the early stages of his loan at the Riverside Stadium, Nypan has not started a game since a 1-1 home draw in October and will hope for an improvement in his fortunes under new manager Kim Hellberg. However, the youngster has been given the support of former Norway international after the Liverpool legend backed Nypan to make the most of his loan stint and go on to have a successful career at City.

Riise told Foot Italia: ‘He’s a great player, but I think the step from Rosenborg to Manchester City is big. Obviously, Middlesbrough is a step up too. It’s a big club in its own right, and he’s done well so far. He’s a great player. He’s got the technique, good vision, and he’s a smart player. He would suit the style of Pep’s football perfectly. But whether he’s good enough or has the right physique for the very top, I’m not quite sure yet. I think also that’s why they sent him on loan to Boro, to see how he handles that kind of physical side of the game.

‘But obviously he’s a good player, but I’m still not quite sure how good he will be for Man City because he needs to grow and, and get to a higher level. He’s a young player so he’s going to have a great career in front of him. Hopefully he will be successful at Man City.”
