Maresca “completely relaxed” after slump in form; tells fans “that’s football”

It’s the question everyone around Chelsea wants answered after the Blues went from the high point of their season, a 3-0 win over Barcelona, to a run of four games without a win, all without a breath.

Well, Enzo Maresca had the answer. Or at least an answer as to how his team could go from so good to so bad and couldn’t find any consistency in their results.

“For me personally, because it’s football, for me it’s completely normal,” the manager said.

“Again, I understand that most of the time we are always looking for problems or things that we need to solve. But again, Leeds game was last Wednesday. It’s eight, nine days ago. And now in eight, nine days ago we are not going to change our season because we didn’t get the points that we expect for sure.

“But I’m completely relaxed. I’m completely okay because I’m sure that at the end of the season we’re going to be where we have to be. The reason why we dropped points, again, because it’s football. Bournemouth away, we drew. Leeds away was a bad day for us, for all of us. Atalanta game, again, it’s a game that for me, we were in the game, we were winning, we were okay. And we conceded, if you review the first goal, they had one player inside the box and we had seven players. So we have seven against one and we conceded the goal. So big mistakes are things that we need to improve.”

It’s a lot of words to say “that’s just football, you can’t win them all.” But we were hoping for something a little strong and more detailed than that. If this is our attitude to defeats, we’re not going to win too many titles.

Cole Palmer should be fit to play tomorrow, but Enzo Maresca’s update on the midfielder was not fully positive, and in fact a little confusing.

Chelsea striker Liam Delap will also miss the game, and Enzo Maresca was asked for an update on him both physically and mentally after a tough period for the young player.
