Knicks finally give update on Deuce McBride’s ankle injury

When Deuce McBride, who had been playing some of the best basketball of his career, went down with a leg injury in the Knicks’ win over the Magic last Sunday, it went somewhat under the radar.

The Knicks were coming off a nice win against a team that was 2-0 against them, a bigger name in Franz Wagner went down with what looked like a worse injury, and the Knicks’ schedule moving forward didn’t warrant any immediate panic.

New York, as it sometimes does, took its time in diagnosing McBride’s injury. So long that some even momentarily forgot that the fifth-year guard had suffered an injury.

We did finally get some updates earlier this week when Knicks reporters revealed that they had heard murmurs of a potential high ankle sprain. And on Thursday night, we got an official update as the Knicks announced that McBride suffered a left ankle sprain and that he would be re-evaluated in one week. This still isn’t a very detailed update, as we don’t have a timetable at all. But a re-evaluation in one week could signal that the swelling and the injury itself weren’t that bad. Furthermore, the mere fact that the Knicks didn’t list it as a high ankle sprain right off the bat could be looked at as a positive as those often take much longer to recover from than regular sprains.

New York has the tough task of playing a physical Magic team next. And a win against them could mean a matchup against the dominant 24-1 defending champions. But McBride and the Knicks did get lucky with the timing of the injury, as there is a possibility that he only ends up missing a handful of games.
