Preview: Everton v Arsenal Women

We head to Goodison Park for the first time ever in the Barclays Women’s Super League for Saturday’s game against Everton.

It’s a 12pm kick-off on Merseyside as we look for a win that could take us up to second in the table.

Victory against the Toffees would also see us close the gap to leaders Manchester City to five points ahead of their meeting with Aston Villa.

STOPPING THE ROT IN STYLE

Before December, Brian Sørensen’s side hadn’t won in the WSL since the opening weekend’s Merseyside derby, so it sent shockwaves around the world when they recently ended Chelsea’s 34-game unbeaten run with a 1-0 victory at Kingsmeadow.

It was actually their second win in a row though in all competitions, having beaten Newcastle United 3-1 away a week prior in the Subway Women’s League Cup.

Ornella Vignola is their top scorer in the league with four goals, including her hat-trick against Liverpool.

Everton Women moved into Goodison Park this season having previously played at Walton Hall Park. They also now play select matches at the new Hill Dickinson Stadium.

WHAT THE MANAGERS SAY

Slegers: “I think I can take a moment to thank the fans so far for 2025. There’s three games left to play for us, no more home games, but if you look at it like you say, travelling early, the early kick-off against Liverpool and the amount of fans we get at the Emirates. I know everyone has been travelling from, or some have been travelling from far to see us so early in the day.

"So we appreciate it, we don’t take it for granted, I’m very thankful for the support we get as a team. That’s the home games for 2025 and we have three away games left, but it’s incredible that there will be so many fans (at) Everton away. I take a moment to say thank you to the fans for 2025, they’ve been incredible. - read every word of Renée’s pre-Everton press conference.

Sørensen: “It seems like we have a little bit of consistency. That paid off and the girls were excellent. They didn’t want to lose that [Chelsea] game, that’s for sure!”

“If we can do the same against Arsenal, that puts us in a good position. I’m positive going in to the Arsenal game. We know it is going to be a tough game against a good team.”

TEAM NEWS

A late call will be made on the fitness of Laia Codina, while Jenna Nighswonger is not expected to travel to Merseyside.

There are no other injury concerns following our 1-0 win over FC Twente.

For Everton, Max Pacheco has returned to the squad from injury.

FACTS AND STATS

Everton won their first ever WSL meeting with us 3-1 in July 2011 but are winless in 22 league games against us since (D3 L19), the longest winless run any team has versus another in WSL history.

The only team to have more wins over an opponent in the WSL than our 19 against Everton are ourselves versus Liverpool (20).

We have won our final WSL away game in nine of the last 12 calendar years (since 2013 – L3), including when winning on Merseyside against Liverpool last year.

We are unbeaten in our last five WSL games (W3 D2), our best run of the season.

Stina Blackstenius has the best minutes per goal rate of any player to score more than twice in the WSL this season (5 goals, 84 mins/goal) – her goal from the bench against Aston Villa on MD10 was her third this season and 13th overall as a substitute, the most of any player in WSL history.

Alessia Russo has scored 50 goals in 99 WSL appearances, the second most of any English player through their first century of outings in the competition, behind only Fran Kirby (61 goals).

MATCH OFFICIALS

Stacey Pearson has been appointed to take charge of Saturday’s match. She has seen over four WSL matches this season, most recently working across London City Lionesses’ 4-2 win against Tottenham Hotspur.

Her last involvement in one of our WSL matches was for our home game agasinst Everton in October 2024, which was a goalless draw.
