Brighton and Liverpool battling it out for ‘next Szoboszlai’ with playmaker in high demand

Brighton are reportedly watching Ferencvaros’ Hungarian hotshot Alex Toth, who has been likened to Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai, and are set to go head-to-head with some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs for his signature.

The 20-year-old versatile midfielder has progressed through Ferencvaros’ youth teams over the last seven years, and in 2023, at the age of 17, he was given his first team debut.

So far this season, he has been a key player for the Hungarian side, having played 1,623 minutes across 23 games, scoring two goals and providing five assists. He’s also earned nine international caps.

According to Football Insider, Brighton have been watching the youngster alongside Liverpool and Newcastle, who are both keen on the playmaker and looking for ways to strengthen their respective midfields.

It’s said that Toth’s impressive performances for Ferencvaros and the Hungarian national team has earned him many plaudits in European football, with most of the sport’s biggest clubs closely monitoring him.

With Carlos Baleba having a poor start to the season and likely to leave next summer, the Seagulls look to be already planning for life without the Cameroonian after being linked with Aston Villa’s Lamare Bogarde, Lyon’s Tyler Morton, and Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney.

However, they will need to act fast if they want to bring Toth to the south coast, as Eddie Howe is eager for midfield reinforcements in January to strengthen their squad for the second half of his side’s Premier League and Champions League campaigns.

The Albion may have an advantage over the Magpies in the race to sign the youngster though, given how they will be able to offer him more minutes than their rivals, who already have Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, Sandro Tonali, Jacob Ramsey, Lewis Miley and Joe Willock as options in midfield.
