Thiago Alcantara began his new role as Barcelona assistant coach under Hansi Flick in early September. The 34-year-old previously starred for Barca before winning titles with Bayern Munich and Liverpool. The midfielder bid farewell to Anfield after four seasons, during which he made 98 appearances and scored three goals.

An experienced figure with an impressive medal collection, Thiago added to it by lifting the Emirates FA Cup and FA Community Shield in 2022 with the Reds. He opened up about his decision to move into coaching after retiring from playing in the summer of 2024.

“I am working on my coaching, and am passionate about understanding and learning from other areas relating to performance. For example, talking with physiotherapists or fitness trainers about what they do,” he told the Coaches’ Voice. “If I progress as a coach, it is because my talent perhaps wasn’t meant only to be a football player, but also to help others. I am very didactic; I want to help a lot, and can direct my talent towards making a real difference in the lives of other athletes.”

Thiago Alcantara has been linked with a move to struggling La Liga side Levante. Levante sacked manager Julian Calero at the end of November following a poor run of results and are now searching for a replacement.

According to Matteo Moretto, Thiago was approached about the possibility of becoming the club’s new boss but declined the offer. Levante are also said to have approached Raul Gonzalez, but the former Real Madrid star has likewise turned down the opportunity.

The offers to Thiago and Raul suggest that Levante are willing to take a gamble on an inexperienced manager, a risky move given their current predicament. The club currently sit at the bottom of La Liga after 15 matches, five points adrift of 17th place and the safety zone.
