A new pub has opened along The Strand, in what the owner is calling the start of a “takeover”. What was once a home for Liverpool FC supporters has now gone to the other side, with a rebrand seeing rechristened as Moody Blues.

At the helm of the venue are two Evertonians, Paul Moody and Paul Egen. They want to combine two of their passions within the venue - football and a specific genre of music. Paul Moody, from Walton, told the ECHO: “I’ve been a season ticket holder since I was four years old.

"It was like a massive wrench for us to leave Goodison Park, and so to build something now where Evertonians can come and create memories is what we want to do.

"This is for the younger generation, the next set of Everton fans, and for people my age to remember the club. We’ve done the last few Everton games, and the footfall is really increasing. On Saturday, when Everton beat Nottingham Forest, the place was chocka before and after the match.

“Sometimes, it feels like you're swimming against the tide in this industry. The pub trade is so difficult at the moment, but to see the fruit of your labour working and paying off is an absolutely fantastic feeling.

“It feels good that we are taking over what was previously a Red-bar. We are turning it blue. This is hopefully Everton taking over a bit of the city, really. We have no plans to go anywhere, and listening to the fans, they don’t either. They are all saying ‘it was once Jurgen’s, but it is ours now’, and that's what we really wanted.”

Jurgen's Bierhaus first opened in 2019 in the former Tom Hall's Tavern building. It then rebranded to The Three Graces, a change that happened just a few months after the former Liverpool FC manager bid an emotional farewell to the team after nine years of service.

On match days at Moody Blues, flags outside and inside will be flying, and between this, the empty spaces on the wall will be filled with memorabilia. This includes a signed programme from the 1984 squad, a signed flag from the winning 1985 Rotterdam team and one of Neville Southall’s red jerseys.

On non-match days, the venue will turn its focus to spotlighting local musicians. Regardless of the day, Paul, who previously worked in hotels, emphasised Liverpool FC fans are still welcome.

The 47-year-old said: “This is the first pub we’ve taken over. It’s something Paul and I have always wanted to do and toyed with the idea. We just took the leap as the pair of us are Evertonians. We wanted to combine sport with music as we love Indie music, so we’ve really just gone with what we know.

“We want to push any talent as much as we can. We’ve got a stage we want to put to use with open-mic nights. We want to celebrate everything that is good about the music side of the city.”

Spread across two bars, the front sits 200 and the back, reserved for functions, fits around 150 people. Now, in the swing of things, the team are looking to serve food moving forward.

Until then, they are focused on their events which will see former Everton players come to the venue before every home game. Next on the appearance list is midfielder Joe Parkinson scheduled for Saturday, December 20 and winger Mark Ward on Sunday, January 4 2026. Both of the stars’ events will be compered Alan Myers.
