Chelsea cannot stop themselves from buying players as they are set to have another active transfer window.

That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who has offered his prediction on Chelsea ahead of the January window opening in a few weeks time.

Chelsea smashed the record for player sales in the summer to balance the books after signing nine stars for a total of around £285million.

Despite that, Chelsea will look to spend again in January, with the goalkeeping position seen as a priority.

Keith Wyness offers Chelsea January verdict

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – would be shocked if Chelsea did not make a signing in January.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks injuries to players may play a part in how much they spend.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Well, they’re making all those noises so that, you know it’s the classic position. I have done this before, but I’ve put out sort of statements like that so that clubs don’t think they can charge over the odds. That’s often a bit of a game that clubs play.

“Chelsea not signing a player would be like an alcoholic having one last drink. They are just addicted to buying players, as we know. And I’d be surprised if it is zero.

“I think what may actually dictate it, though, and it may be that policy that they’re going to try and cut back certainly, but injuries may be something that dictates some activity.”

Chelsea won’t move in one position

Chelsea will not be lining up a move for a striker despite the latest injury blow suffered to summer arrival Liam Delap.

Delap suffered a shoulder injury during Chelsea’s 0-0 draw at Bournemouth, with Marc Guiu now set to deputise for Joao Pedro.

The 22-year-old has yet to score a Premier League goal for the club since his move from Ipswich Town.
