Chelsea withdraw interest in signing – Player already said yes to Blues

Last summer, Chelsea failed in their attempt to sign AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

Two months ago, Corriere dello Sport reported he was about to join Chelsea before new Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri convinced him to stay.

The France international is in his final year of contract. On November 6th, journalist Marco Pasotto reported he still fancies a move to Chelsea and is eager to restart negotiations with the Blues.

Later that month, we covered claims from Italy that Chelsea are the frontrunners despite Juventus’ interest. It was also indicated he’s most likely to join Enzo Maresca’s side for free.

Gazzetta dello Sport now bring the latest twist in the saga involving Chelsea. They point out the 30-year-old said yes to Chelsea in June, but they couldn’t agree terms with Milan.

Maignan has kept eight clean sheets and conceded 12 goals from 16 matches this season.

Allgeri is keen on retaining him beyond this season. The Serie A side’s finances were hit after failing to qualify for Europe this season. They are currently leading the league table, level on points with second placed Napoli.

Milan are in the driving seat to return to the Champions League next season. Gazzetta say they are keeping this in mind to reopen discussions with Maignan for the renewal. He earns €2.8m per year and their plan is to offer him a base salary of €5m annually.

Recent claims have stated the Blues are the frontrunners to sign him in 2026. The report now claims Chelsea have stepped aside.

The newspaper states: ‘He’s seen that under Allegri, the Rossoneri have returned to competitiveness after a nightmare 2024/25 season. And this could prompt him to reflect on the future. The outcome, in short, isn’t as obvious as it was a few months ago, also because Chelsea has withdrawn.’

It’s not given that Maignan will sign an extension. However, Milan would be pleased that Chelsea are no longer chasing him.
