Arne Slot's key decision as Liverpool beat Brighton while Mo Salah saga takes latest twist

There was only one story coming out of Anfield over the past seven days - and it all revolved around Mohamed Salah.

Dropped by Slot on Wednesday, but making his return on Saturday, anything Salah did was destined to make headlines. However, Hugo Ekitike, the man who has put Liverpool on his back this season, had something to say about that.

In a turbulent week, Slot trusted the Frenchman to bring some calm to the banks of the River Mersey - selecting him to lead the line. Ekitike repaid that trust in style, scoring a brace to inspire Liverpool to a rare Premier League victory in recent months.

Slot, at times this season, has looked like a man searching for answers - frantically changing his starting side in the hope he'll stumble upon some gold.

However, on Saturday, he might have just found it - or it could have been down to Salah's performance.

It was his song that rang around Anfield when he was brought on off the bench in the 26th minute, after an injury to Joe Gomez, and from that moment on it was the Salah show as he rolled back the years.

This was the Salah of last season - a constant thorn in the side of Brighton's defence. He notched a well deserved assist for Liverpool's second of the game and might have felt unlucky not to be on the scoresheet.

Slot then turned his attention to seeing the game out, too many times this season, Liverpool have seen leads seemingly evaporate.

He turned to his bench to see out the result as Dominik Szoboszlai, who was imperious again while playing out of postion, was forced off the pitch.

Brighton threw caution to the wind as they looked to expose Liverpool's shaky backline - but it held firm as the Reds claimed all three points and a clean sheet.

Slot's problems won't disappear overnight and he'll know have to do without Salah for at least two games, but it's a step in the right director for Liverpool - who looked out on the canvas after Leeds.

It's Spurs away next for Liverpool, who have moved up to 6th, before they welcome Wolves after Christmas.
