Maresca has to clarify “worst” claim that will surprise fans after winless run

Chelsea cruised to a fairly straightforward win over Everton at Stamford Bridge today, a crucial victory to end a run of 4 games without a win.

Speaking after the game, Enzo Maresca made some pretty strong comments about how hard it’s been since the defeat to Atalanta on Tuesday night.

Maresca admits to “worst” period since he came to Chelsea due to lack of support

“Since I joined the club, the last 48 hours have been the worst since I joined the club because many people didn’t support us,” the manager said.

As you’d expect, journalists wanted some more detail on what he was referring to, and the manager gave them this added detail which made it clear he wasn’t referring to a lack of support from the fans:

“Worst 48 hours since I joined the club because people didn’t support me or the team in general. I love the fans and we are very happy with the fans.”

Presumably he’s referring to what the media has been saying, as he’s always had big support from the club. This didn’t feel like as tough a period as the one he went through at the start of this year, when it really did seem he was under pressure, but clearly the coach sees things differently.

We have a big chance to win against Cardiff in the cup in midweek next week and build on this good feeling going forward.

Chelsea’s clean sheet today was the crucial part of their win, and it keeps up an incredible record when they have one particular pair of players on the pitch.

Chalobah was one of the stars of the show today and his stats highlight another excellent performance alongside Wesley Fofana in Chelsea’s back line.
