Cole Palmer addresses World Cup question as Thomas Tuchel spotted in the stands for Chelsea vs Everton

Cole Palmer stepped on the pitch at Stamford Bridge for the first time in 119 days, and marked his Chelsea return with a goal.

Watching on from the stands was England manager Thomas Tuchel, who will surely have been impressed with Palmer’s clinical finish in the opening stages of the win over Everton.

We predicted that Palmer would break his 222-day scoreless streak at Stamford Bridge, and it took him just 21 minutes to prove us right.

Ahead of the game, Palmer sent a message to Chelsea fans that this was a turning point, and he backed it up on the pitch.

Speaking to the media in the aftermath, Palmer was asked about the World Cup and what he was thinking with the German coach in attendance.

Cole Palmer characteristically cool about Thomas Tuchel and the World Cup

Rather than being left to soak in the victory, Palmer was quickly pressed for his thoughts on the national team — specifically, his prospects for next summer’s tournament.

Tuchel has warned Palmer about the competition in his position, but the Chelsea star isn’t letting it distract him.

As he told BBC Sport: “I’ve not been looking too far ahead to be honest. I’ve been injured for three months, I just need to get back to full fitness.

“I know what I can offer when I’m fully fit so hopefully I get there soon.”

Everyone knows what Palmer brings to a side. On his day, there are very few, if any, players you would rather have pulling the strings.

The tournament is fast approaching, though, so he will need to string together a run of games to force his way back into Tuchel’s thoughts. There’s no doubt that’s what he will do.

Palmer not quite there yet

The recovery process isn’t linear, especially with an awkward muscle injury like the one Palmer sustained.

He just has to play himself back into a rhythm.

As he puts it: “I wouldn’t say I’m at my best yet. I’m still dealing with an injury. Hopefully it gets better and better but there’s still a bit to go.

“It is getting better. The stuff I’ve been doing with the physios at the club. It’s just a matter of not doing too much too soon. Literally, it’s just a day by day thing.”

Maresca is delighted to have his star back 🙌

Promising stuff for any Chelsea fan. The Blues find themselves still in the mix for every competition despite Palmer’s extended absence.

Getting him back to flying form should elevate what Maresca’s side can achieve this season.
