Enzo Maresca hit out at his lack of support after beating Everton as Chelsea’s annoyed head coach claimed he had endured his ‘worst 48 hours since I joined the club’.

The Blues won 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to move back into the top four with Malo Gusto assisting Cole Palmer for the opener before scoring himself.

It was when asked his opinion on Gusto’s performance that Maresca had his unexpected pop at ‘people’, though when pressed, he declined to explain to whom he was referring. It is not known whether he meant inside or outside of Chelsea, but he made a point of praising the fanbase.

‘The last 48 hours have been the worst 48 hours since I joined the club because many people didn't support us,’ said Maresca, whose side finally won after failing to beat Leeds, Bournemouth and Atalanta in their last three games.

‘So I'm very happy for Malo, that the effort from Malo and from the rest show that they are all there and they want to help this club.’

Asked to clarify his statement, Maresca repeated: ‘Worst 48 hours since I joined the club because people didn't support me and the team.’ He added: ‘I love the fans and we are very happy with the fans.’

The Chelsea boss bemoaned a lack of support but refused to reveal whom he was referring to

On getting back to winning, the Blues boss said: ‘I took completely 100 per cent responsibility from the Leeds game. It's been my mistake in terms of the line-up, in terms of the game plan. It was not about the players. Again, we are getting better and better and better, especially with all these kinds of situations that we try to manage since day one.’

Meanwhile, Everton boss David Moyes was blunt when describing the difference between his side and Chelsea after what was a Premier League clash full of chances to score for both teams.

‘Maybe a billion-pound difference,’ Moyes said. ‘Overall, it’s a game of 11 v 11, so that’s how we started. I thought we played well.’

Losing Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to an as-yet-unspecified injury after 16 minutes was a blow to the visitors while Jack Grealish was also removed towards the end after feeling his hamstring.

Moyes continued: ‘The only thing I would say, we were never out of the game at 2-0.

‘Today might have even got us into the top four if we got a result. I don’t want to miss chances. In football, you get a chance, you’ve got to take it. It wasn’t for the want of trying, that’s for sure. We actually challenged the players to come to Chelsea and show that we could match them. Maybe we just ran short of the quality required.’
