NBA star Stephon Castle has become the latest sports figure to delve into team ownership after buying stakes in a Connecticut soccer team.

The San Antonio Spurs sophomore has been one of the standout stars in the NBA this season, building on his impressive Rookie of the Year displays last term.

Now, as he continues to go from strength-to-strength on the basketball court, he's also expanding his portfolio into other sports - such as soccer.

On Friday, the Connecticut Sports Group confirmed that the Spurs star had joined an expanded ownership group behind both CT United FC and their women's team.

In a statement, Castle said: 'Playing basketball at UConn showed me the incredible talent and passion for sports here, in Connecticut.

'My family and I are proud to invest in CTSG and help build elite clubs that inspire young athletes, energize fans, and create lasting pride across the state.'

Meanwhile, in an interview with Andscape, he also said: 'It was the right choice just to start at my age and to also give back to the state of Connecticut for what they've done for me.

'I just wanted to put my name out there as well and just have it build up as my career goes on. Just to have this on the back end is another great idea.'

'I just wanted to take this path early. My people brought it to me, and I thought it was a great idea,' Castle said. 'I love the state of Connecticut for obvious reasons, and I thought it would be a great idea.'

According to a statement, CT United FC, the state's men's professional team, will play in the MLS NEXT Pro in 2026, while the future women's team will join the WPSL Pro in 2028.

However, that wasn't always the plan. CT United was initially teased in 2023 before being formally announced in 2024 - with hopes of featuring in the MLS.

However, their dreams hit a stumbling block over their stadium development, which is still in the works. They have since been seeking $127million in state funding.

CTSG have said, in their bid to gain funding, that the planned Bridgeport stadium complex would also include 1,000 housing unites and create 1,300 permanent jobs.

Castle follows in the footsteps of Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds and sports icons such as Tom Brady and LeBron James.

Last year, NFL legend Brady bought 3.3 per cent of shares in Birmingham City, while 'King James' paid £4.7million for a two per cent stake in Premier League giants Liverpool in 2011.

Deadpool star Reynolds has certainly become a familiar face to Wrexham fans, while also sharing their footballing fortunes with viewers worldwide after he bought the then-non-league Welsh club in 2020.

He and business partner Rob McElhenney - also an actor as well as screenwriter and co-creator of sitcom It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia - have become heroes to supporters and the surrounding town.
