Liverpool fan charged with tragedy chanting

**A Liverpool fan has been charged over alleged tragedy chanting.**

Nicholas Harpur will appear at Leeds Magistrates Court on January 5, 2026 following the incident at Elland Road last Saturday (December 6).

The 25-year-old from Sefton is charged with a Section 5 public order offence which is said to have taken place during the Reds’ draw with Leeds United.

A police clampdown on tragedy chanting has been in effect since the Crown Prosecution Service made it an actionable offence from the 2023/24 season.

In February this year, an Essex Police officer was sacked after admitting to tragedy chanting in October 2024 while attending a Liverpool-Chelsea game.

Supporters of Manchester United, Tottenham, Manchester City and Crystal Palace were also arrested over using the harmful slurs at Anfield.
