The Premier League’s in-form side Aston Villa take on strugglers West Ham this weekend
Aston Villa are aiming to break a 29-year-streak in this weekend’s highly-anticipated showdown with Premier League strugglers West Ham United.
Unai Emery’s side make the trip to the capital having started the weekend in third position in the league table and are firmly in the title race after shock victories over league-leaders Arsenal and 2024 winners Manchester City in recent months.
The Lions are on an eight-match winning streak across all competitons, and have recorded victories in nine of their last 10 matches, including five in a row in the league in build-up to this weekend’s spectacle at the London Stadium. They’ll go in as favourites after their excellent run of form, but will need to put an end to a record that has lasted since 1996 if they are to really pile the pressure on Emery’s former side Arsenal.
Aston Villa aim to break 29-year-record against West Ham
Aston Villa are aiming to record consecutive away victories over West Ham for the first time since 1995/1996 when Brian Little was in the dugout.
Little’s team travelled to Upton Park and secured an emphatic 4-1 over Harry Redknapp’s team in November 1995 after a brace from Savo Milošević and further strikes from Tommy Johnson and star man Dwight Yorke. A year later they followed that up with another win in the capital, this time winning 2-0 as Ugo Ehiogu and Yorke both got on the scoresheet.
Since then, Aston Villa have been solid on the road against West Ham. They’ve scored in every visit to face the Hammers since 2016 and have never failed to score at the London Stadium. They are also unbeaten in five matches against West Ham at home and away, recording two victories and three draws in the process. However, they are still searching for back-to-back away victories against the Hammers away from home in the 21st century. They are in a strong position to end that streak after winning 2-1 in the 2024/25 corresponding fixture after goals from Amadou Onana and Jhon Duran.
What is Aston Villa’s longest ever winning streak as a top-flight club?
Aston Villa are currently on their longest ever winning streak as a top-flight club in more than 110 years after winning eight consecutive matches across all competitions. It means they are now three wins away from making history and equalling their all-time best winning run of 11 in a row all the way back in 1914.
This good form is far from an anomaly and it’s worth noting that the second city club have the fourth-highest points tally in the Premier League since Emery took over in November 2022, and the third highest this calendar year with 67 points – four behind Manchester City and Arsenal.
They are not just relying on their imperious home form either. No team has as many Premier League away wins, or has earned more points on the road, than Aston Villa since the start of March.
