Opinion: Enzo Maresca must now give Chelsea starter a break after underwhelming display against Everton

Chelsea finally got back to winning ways after four games without a victory thanks to a 2-0 win over Everton at Stamford Bridge.

Enzo Maresca won’t really care how it came, but in truth the Blues were by no means at their best for much of the win over the Toffees.

They relied on Cole Palmer to return to goalscoring ways, with the star man finding the net for the first time since September.

Cole Palmer is back!

Three months, 91 days, 2184 hours since Cole Palmer last scored, how good is that to see, Blues fans?

He partnered Enzo Fernandez, however the World Cup winner did not enjoy one of his better performances on Saturday.

It is unfortunately becoming a bit of a theme of late to see him not at his best. Fernandez scored poorly in our player ratings for the defeat against Atalanta.

Fernandez was sloppy in possession, particularly in the first half, with fatigue looking as if it is starting to play a part in his game.

There has been very little opportunity for rest of late, with Moises Caicedo suspended for the prior three domestic games.

The Ecuador international is now available again, and Maresca must take this as an opportunity to give Fernandez a break.

This can start with the EFL Cup game against Cardiff, however should potentially continue to the game against Newcastle next Saturday.

Even with Romeo Lavia injured, there are plenty of options available to fulfil the role in the coming games.

Maresca’s midfield options without Enzo Fernandez

As Caicedo returns, he could see himself with a new partner in midfield due to the excellent recent performances of James.

The club captain has started the last three games now, and while he could be rested against Cardiff it is likely that he is back in the side against Newcastle.

James has changed his mind about playing in midfield, with him originally having a preference for featuring at right-back.

Elsewhere, Andrey Santos is ready for more minutes, after he entered the fray against Everton to replace Palmer, who continues to build up his fitness following his groin injury.
