David Moyes issues clear response when asked if James Garner could leave Everton after Chelsea…

Everton were hoping to pick up their fifth win in six Premier League games against Chelsea, but they ultimately suffered a 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge.

Everton actually produced a really positive away performance and were unfortunate not to come away with a result.

There were a few poor performances, though, as Jake O’Brien struggled when going forward, and that visibly frustrated David Moyes.

Thierno Barry received criticism for his display, too, as the Toffees centre-forward was completely anonymous.

Moyes explained after the game that James Garner was the Man of the Match against Chelsea and he was asked about his future at the club.

Everton manager David Moyes said he won’t let James Garner leave

Garner’s current contract actually expires at the end of the season, although Everton do hold an option to extend it by a year.

Garner has been linked with a move to Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa in recent weeks.

So, after the Chelsea game, Moyes was asked about the Everton midfielder’s future on Merseyside.

“Look, I wouldn’t be letting him go, so I think the club will be doing everything they can to make sure he stays,” the Toffees manager said.

“It shows probably a difference… I don’t know if many clubs were after the Everton players in the past but they’re now beginning to show a bit of interest in some of the players, which is a good sign.

“Hopefully he’ll sign a new contract when it’s the time, but he’s got the end of the season, he’s got the option as well, so obviously we’ll be on that if we need to be.”

Everton are in talks to renew James Garner’s contract

It was reported earlier this month that Everton are in talks to renew Garner’s contract, and there is a belief that a deal will be agreed.

The 24-year-old has started all 16 of Everton’s Premier League games this season, and has perhaps been the most consistent performer.

Moyes has been vocal that Garner should be considered for an England call-up, and the former Man United star was seen in conversation with Tuchel after the 1-0 win at Old Trafford.

Garner’s versatility would certainly be useful in the World Cup squad, as he can operate at full-back, as a number six and as a box-to-box midfielder.
