Brian Windhorst is sceptical about the NBA Europe project, but wants to see it succeed for the benefit of European basketball.
Brian Windhorst was in Belgrade this week to watch the Eternal Derby between Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade and Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade in Beogradska Arena.
Before the game, Windhorst talked with Mozzart Sport in an exclusive interview.
Among other topics, Windhorst was asked to discuss about the emerging NBA Europe project.
Windhorst claims that he's doubting the success of it and elaborates why:
"It's not a topic that is talked much about in the US. NBA will do what they want, I don't think it will be successful because I think there is not enough talent in the EuroLeague right now. I also think it will be a challenge to create teams from scratch and expect results," he started.
"I completely understand why is NBA doing this and I'm sure that they will try. I hope it will be successful because if you have a strong competition in Europe, you can create competitions with NBA, Africa, Australia, Asia, that would be fantastic."
"I doubt it because I spent a lot of time in Europe and Europeans don't feel basketball like Americans. You can't just insert American League in Europe and tell everyone to play. It's simply not working like that."
Even though he's sceptical, Windhorst still wants to see the project succeed:
"From what I heard, they are trying to translate American League into Europe. That's why I understand what they are doing. I hope they will succeed because if you invest into European basketball it's probably a great thing."
"You can also say that European basketball isn't as strong because there are not enough investments, someone has to do it, and it's not done enough in Europe. Americans think there is a lot of untapped potential and that they can develop it," Windhorst concluded.
