'Going to be hard': Steve Nicol names the only winger he believes can replace Mohamed Salah at Liverpool

Mohamed Salah could have played his last-ever game for Liverpool, with there already being talk about his exit plans.

The Reds really have shown their resilience over the last week after winning two games rather impressively despite all the noise surrounding the club.

Salah too has dealt with it well as his performance against Brighton has shown how he is willing to put his ego to one side and help the rest of his team out, although there is still a chance he leaves.

Liverpool fans clearly want him to stay, but a move to Saudi in the new year is still a possibility, with talks with his agents over the coming weeks being vital in what happens next.

Former Red Steve Nicol, though, believes he has shown that Liverpool need to keep hold of him, with there being only one winger who he thinks can replace him.

Steve Nicol believes Liverpool must have Antoine Semenyo lined up if they are to let Mohamed Salah leave

Whoever has the impossible task of replacing Salah certainly has big boots to fill, as no matter how good they are, it is highly unlikely they will be remotely close to the Egyptian’s level.

Liverpool still have to try, though, and one name being constantly linked with a move is Antoine Semenyo, especially as he has a £65m release clause that can be activated this winter.

Nicol also thinks that he is the best, and perhaps only, option as well, indicating that they must have a deal in place early if they are even contemplating letting Salah leave.

“The only thing now would be that they have to have somebody lined up for January,” Nicol said on ESPN FC about Salah potentially leaving.

“Who would you have then Stevie?” he was asked.

“I’d have Semenyo from Bournemouth, but it’s going to be hard to get him out in January.

“If they can’t do that, then can you really let him go? The difference down the right-hand side when he came on to what we had seen, we were looking at Joe Gomez and there was nothing else, zero.

“So unless they are bringing someone like Semenyo in, then they can’t let him go.”

Antoine Semenyo vs Mohamed Salah this season

There is no denying how good a player Semenyo is, with the Ghanaian showing that last season and at the very start of the new campaign.

However, he has struggled for form a little bit as this season has gone on, with it now being seven games that he has not got a goal or an assist in the league.

Goals 6 5

Assists 3 4

Despite all the praise he has got, as well as the criticism Salah has received, both actually have the same amount of goal involvements this season with nine.

Semenyo, however, has a bit more pace about him and is one of the best dribblers in the league, suggesting this youthful approach might make him a better option in this Liverpool attack.
