One Liverpool star delivered an impressive display as the Reds beat Brighton 2-0 at Anfield on Saturday afternoon
Liverpool star Curtis Jones might just be the club’s most underrated player as the Reds star delivered another impressive display in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion.
The outing was the homegrown star’s 200th appearance for Liverpool and he is swiftly becoming undroppable under Arne Slot. He had a 92 per cent pass completion rate against Brighton, with 72 of of his 78 passes finding a teammate.
He had 98 touches during the game and succeeded with four of his five dribbles. He made two tackles, one block, two clearance, three interceptions and two headed clearances against the Seagulls as he was everywhere in the game with a hugely-influential display.
He also won eight of his 12 ground duels.
Slot has changed Liverpool’s shape in recent games with Jones one of the holding midfielders who has really shone in recent weeks. He must now be one of the first names on the team sheet.
He is still only 24 but has already racked up 200 appearances for his boyhood club.
This season he has made the most accurate passes per 90 of any Liverpool player and also has the third most accurate long balls per 90 with only Virgil van Dijk and Dominink Szoboszlai producing more. He also the second most successful dribbles per 90, with only Hugo Ekitike boasting more.
He also ranks second for tackles per 90 and third for possession won in the final third. His influence and importance is clear.
After the win against Inter, Stephen Warnock was keen to praise Jones, as he said: “I’m just looking down at Ryan Gravenberch, who was the man of the match. I think you could have given that to him or Curtis Jones or Dominik, who were the outstanding performers.”
Speaking about the player last year, Slot felt that becoming a father made Jones more mature. The Dutchman said: “With Curtis it is maybe not me who did it but because he became a father – and I had nothing to do with that.
“You never know if that plays a part or not but since the moment he became a father he started putting in great performances. He already did this in the first few weeks that we worked together in pre-season – I was like ‘wow, quality player’ – but then his performances dropped. But since the moment he became a father he was outstanding again.
“I think it might have to do with that a bit, but in general it has to do with how the team plays.”
