There is still speculation over Arne Slot's future at Liverpool despite recent wins
Liverpool’s latest win over Brighton and Hove Albion took some of the wind out of the tornado that has been building at Anfield. However, the Reds remain on a rocky course and reports continue to speculate about Arne Slot’s future.
After the Merseyside Derby, Liverpool descended into a torrid run of form, which included six defeats in seven Premier League games. Since their win over Everton, the Reds have played 18 games and won just seven of them.
During this dramatic nose-dive in results, reports suggesting Slot could be sacked started doing the rounds. Potential long-term replacements have been sounded out in the media, while reports suggesting Steven Gerrard has been identified as an interim candidate have recently come to light.
Steven Gerrard’s stance on idea of Liverpool return
Multiple reports have recently claimed that Gerrard has been earmarked as the leading candidate to replace Slot on an interim basis, should the club opt to sack the Dutchman.
According to Football Insider, Gerrard is ‘very keen’ on the idea of a return to his boyhood club and would ‘find it very difficult’ to reject an interim manager offer from the Reds.
Last week, Football Insider also reported that Gerrard’s name had been ‘discussed’ behind the scenes at Liverpool, as owners Fenway Sports Group are ‘weighing up’ potential replacement candidates for Slot.
The legendary midfielder and former captain has been named as ‘one possibility’, with the idea that he could join the club on a temporary basis until the end of the season. Liverpool would then return to the market in the summer to pursue a new permanent manager, when more options will be plausible.
Who could Liverpool replace Arne Slot with?
Discussing the Anfield situation on his podcast, the ex-Manchester United defender said: “With someone like Steven Gerrard sitting there, a legend of the club – forget his tenures at different clubs. There's a legend of the football club ready to come in and just steady the ship for them. I wouldn't have been surprised if Steven Gerrard had gotten a call.”
While Liverpool were left frustrated after back-to-back draws against Sunderland and Leeds United, a big positive for the Reds is that they are unbeaten in their last five games in all competitions.
However, with ten points between them and Premier League leaders Arsenal, the pressure is not yet off Slot.
A recent report from CaughtOffside claimed that Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes are ‘seriously considering’ Oliver Glasner as a long-term replacement for Slot, should the club decide the Dutchman is no longer the man for the job on Merseyside.
Talks with the Crystal Palace manager have not yet taken place but he is reportedly a figure who is ‘strongly appreciated’ by those at Anfield. While Liverpool are enjoying their recent wins, if form continues to struggle for consistency, the Reds may be forced to look at other options.
