Rumours surrounding Mohamed Salah’s future continue to do the rounds ahead of AFCON

Mohamed Salah’s future at Liverpool is still very much up for debate as he heads out to represent Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The dust following the winger’s recent bombshell comments seemed to have settled after he sat down to talk with Arne Slot and was included in Saturday’s squad against Brighton.

However, concerns over him leaving Merseyside in 2026 remain and interest from Saudi Arabia continues to mount.

Mo Salah backed to choose Saudi Arabia over MLS

Interest from the MLS as well as the Saudi Pro League has recently been reported but former Everton chief Keith Wyness is confident the Egyptian will prefer a move to the Middle East.

“It’s going to be Saudi. It’s got to be the Saudi Premier League. I mean, there’s been some talk of the MLS, but I don’t see that happening at all. I think he’s going to go to Saudi,” Wyness, who now runs a football consultancy, told Football Insider.

“I mean, I’ve been down there a number of times recently, and it’s hard to say just how big a star he is in the Middle East, being Egyptian, but also within Saudi, he is like, you know, a huge figure.

“And if you look at the timing of Cristiano Ronaldo now on the way out of the Saudi Premier League, they do need another megastar and Salah is the ready-made replacement. So the timing makes sense.”

Ronaldo has been the poster boy of Saudi football since his move to Al-Nassr in 2023. Now 40, he has addressed talks regarding the end of his career, and has confirmed he will retire in ‘one or two years’.

Mo Salah presented with opportunity for ex-Liverpool teammate reunion

While Salah’s involvement in the Brighton game suggests things have been patched up between him and Slot, the doubts continue to hang over his position at Liverpool.

His comments about feeling he doesn’t need to fight for his place in the team and that the club has ‘thrown him under the bus’ still linger. Salah could now be away from Liverpool for as long as an entire month, depending on how far Egypt reach at AFCON.

While focus will be on the tournament with the Pharaohs, these coming weeks will give the winger the chance to really consider his options.

Al-Hilal are reportedly the leading club in the running for Salah, according to another recent update from Wyness for Football Insider. If the Riyadh side put an offer on the table, the 33-year-old will be presented with the opportunity to reunite with former teammate Darwin Nunez.

The Uruguayan left Merseyside for Saudi Arabia this summer following ongoing exit links. Nunez struggled to perform consistently for the Reds and eventually made the move to Al-Hilal for an initial £46.3 million in August.
