Following the OKC Thunder's NBA Cup 111-109 semifinal loss on Saturday, Holmgren offered insightful words about how Wembanyama changed the momentum for the Spurs after the French superstar returned from his 12-game absence due to calf strain.
"The game definitely changes anytime a very unique player comes in the game," Holmgren said about Wemby. "He does things that the other lineups don't replicate.
"So it definitely changed the game, changed how they play, changed how we kind of have to play them."
The big man face-off between Wembanyama and Holmgren drew plenty of chatter this weekend. There were mixed reactions regarding how the Spurs star has been dismissive and subtly jabbing the Thunder center from their latest matchup.
After Holmgren bricked a crucial late-game free throw for Oklahoma City, Wembanyama celebrated and had an impassioned reaction.
Wembanyama fully outplayed Holmgren on their showdown, finishing with 22 points and nine boards in just 21 minutes of play. The OKC big man had 17 markers and seven rebounds, as he struggled with 37.5 percent shooting.
