After Austin Reaves injury, Lakers announce major lineup change vs. Suns

Marcus Smart draws the starting nod to replace Austin Reaves in Los Angeles' Sunday duel against Phoenix.

The Los Angeles Lakers have made an important lineup change this weekend in the wake of the injury absence of Austin Reaves.

Los Angeles Lakers / Schedule

Head coach J.J. Redick told reporters that Marcus Smart will start in place of the injured Reaves heading to their Sunday road matchup against the Phoenix Suns.

Reaves was recently announced out due to a calf strain. The Lakers revealed that he'll be reevaluated in a week, in which Redick dropped an important update.

The undrafted sensation is averaging career-highs in points (27.8), assists (6.7) and rebounds (5.6) this 2025-26 season.

As such, Smart has been superb for LA this year after inking a two-year, $10.5 million deal this past season. He is tallying 10.4 points, 2.8 assists and 1.7 steals per game.

This would mark his 10th starting appearance across 16 games, as the likes of Gabe Vincent, Jake LaRavia and Jarred Vanderbilt are expected to get more minutes with Reaves inactive.
