Steve Kerr admits Warriors struggle to get Jimmy Butler involved

Golden State Warriors are struggling with consistency this season, particularly in getting Jimmy Butler involved in the offense. Coach Steve Kerr said the team needs to run plays through Butler, especially when Stephen Curry is off the floor, to regain control and find rhythm.

Golden State Warriors are struggling to find the rhythm that made them dominant at the end of last season. The team that went 23-8 to close 2024-25 has shown flashes of that intensity this year, but inconsistency on both ends of the court has been a major problem.

That inconsistency was on full display in their 136-131 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers, even as Stephen Curry poured in 48 points.

For coach Steve Kerr, one of the biggest issues has been getting Jimmy Butler involved in the offense.

“I thought we did a better job last year putting in a position to attack and create shots for people,” Kerr said after the loss, per Warriors writer Kenzo Fukuda. “We need to get back to that type of control of the game where we're going to him in the half court, especially when Steph's out. Going to him in the half court, taking care of the ball, turning the other team over, and controlling the game. And we're not there.”

“We're a little bit more in a random flow,” coach explained. “We need to be more particular with getting to some sets where we know we can get him the ball… In the Minnesota game, he went like four straight possessions without touching the ball when Steph was not on the floor.”

Golden State’s reliance on Curry’s gravity and chaos, combined with Butler’s calculated half-court game, was what made them so dangerous last season.

Butler has been productive this season, averaging 19.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 5.0 assists in 31.2 minutes over 23 games.

Without using Butler effectively, the Warriors have struggled in transition-heavy games like the one against Portland.
