Report: Everton interested in signing defender likened to Yerry Mina

The January transfer window is just a couple of weeks away, and Everton have been drawing up a list of targets.

Everton are expected to be busy in the window, with several players being linked with a move to the Hill Dickinson Stadium recently.

Bodo/Glimt winger Jens Petter Hauge has been tipped to join the Toffees, while Fulham left-back Antonee Robinson continues to be rumoured with a return to Merseyside.

AZ Alkmaar and Republic of Ireland centre-forward Troy Parrott is also on the Toffees’ radar after his prolific start to the season.

Now, there is a fresh transfer rumour emerging, and this time it’s about a central defender.

Everton interested in signing Nobel Mendy

Jarrad Branthwaite has been out all season, although he is back on the grass and is nearing a return from injury.

That has left just Michael Keane and James Tarkowski as the only fit and available centre-backs, so that’s one area Everton definitely need to address this winter.

With that said, according to Rudy Galetti’s substack, the Toffees are making checks on Nobel Mendy, who is at Raya Vallecano on loan from Real Betis.

Galleti explains that there are no formal offers just yet, but Moyes’ recruitment staff have made contact with Betis to gather more information on Mendy.

The 21-year-old has only played 16 games of senior football, so if Everton were to sign him, he’d likely join as a squad player initially.

Nobel Mendy is similar to Yerry Mina

According to the FBref statistics, Mendy is of a very similar profile to former Everton defender Yerry Mina.

The Senegalese centre-back is very aggressive and actually ranks in the top four per cent for interceptions per 90 compared to his positional peers across Europe.

Mendy also sits in the top one per cent for blocks, so clearly he’s not shy of putting his body on the line for the team.

The 2004-born is actually left-footed, so he’d provide Moyes’ defensive ranks with much-needed balance.

There’s been no word on how much Mendy could cost, but it’d more than likely be less than £15m considering his lack of experience.
