Dark horse Giannis suitor doesn't have advantages other teams boast

The Minnesota Timberwolves are the latest, though they won't be the last, team rumored to have an interest in trading for Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. That report comes from NBA insider Chris Haynes, who also notes he believes the Greek Freak would like to go somewhere where he could get some sun and be in a big market. That puts Minnesota at a disadvantage.

Timberwolves cannot offer two traits Giannis may desire

Per Haynes, teams included among the recent Giannis chatter include the Knicks, Heat, Warriors, Spurs, and Timberwolves. Miami, Golden State, and San Antonio can offer the weather and or the market size. New York can offer the biggest stage possible at Madison Square Garden, even if it is cold. Minnesota cannot offer either.

What the Timberwolves can offer in place of a big market and sun is the opportunity to play with a clear No. 2 and one of the NBA's rising stars. Anthony Edwards is making the leap to superstardom, and one could argue that pairing him with another superstar could help his game even further. That could entice Giannis, but it's unclear how much over the other suitors.

Minnesota's package wouldn't be the most interesting, likely centered around Julius Randle, Naz Reid, Rob Dillingham, and whatever draft picks the Timberwolves can move.

At this point, the Milwaukee Bucks are making it clear that Giannis is not available for trade. They plan on keeping him unless he asks out. However, if push comes to shove, it would be hard to argue that the Heat would be the frontrunners in a deal. Not only can they offer warm weather and a big market, but no state income tax could certainly serve as an interesting pitch as well.

From Milwaukee's perspective, Miami may also have a quality package if teams like the Spurs plan on keeping their young talent, such as Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle, off the table. Picks and a trade package centered around Kel'el Ware would be a decent starting point. Of course, it would take much, much more in the end.

For now, the Milwaukee Bucks are focused on winning with Giannis on the roster. The Greek Freak staying in town has not been ruled out of the equation. If the Bucks can build off their recent win over the Boston Celtics and keep that momentum going, this chatter could go away.
