Why Mohamed Salah will be in Saudi Arabia this week

The speculation surrounding Mohamed Salah’s future reached a fever pitch last week following his explosive comments after Liverpool’s 3-3 draw at Leeds. The Egyptian superstar, who claimed he felt “thrown under the bus” by the club after being benched, sparked intense rumors of a January exit to the Saudi Pro League. Reports suggested clubs like Al-Ittihad were ready to pounce on the unrest, with Salah even hinting that the upcoming Brighton fixture might be his last at Anfield before AFCON—and potentially for good.

However, the temperature at Anfield has dropped following Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Brighton. Salah, initially named on the bench again, was introduced early in the first half after an injury to Joe Gomez and played a pivotal role in securing the three points. He looked sharp and engaged, notably whipping in a corner for Hugo Ekitike to head home his second goal of the game.

This reintegration suggests that the bridge between player and manager Arne Slot is not burned. With Salah now set to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations holding a new Premier League record for goal involvements at a single club.

But amidst a whirlwind of transfer speculation following his recent comments, Mohamed Salah is reportedly set to travel to Saudi Arabia this week, according to Saudi Arabian broadcaster Al-Riyadiya (via winwin.com). However, Reds fans can relax as the purpose of the visit is not transfer-related.

Salah and the Egyptian national team’s trip to Jeddah is primarily to perform the Umrah pilgrimage before heading into their training camp for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be held in Morocco.

The report adds that that Mohamed Salah’s stay in Saudi Arabia may not be purely religious, with the possibility of him fulfilling advertising and commercial commitments as well.

But what won’t be happening is any transfer talks or negotiations, so Liverpool fans can be calm if they see any images of the Liverpool No.11 in Saudi Arabia this week.
