WALES and Liverpool FC legend Ian Rush is recovering after being admitted to intensive care with flu.

The former striker, who grew up in Flint, was taken to the Countess of Chester Hospital last week after suffering breathing difficulties and spent two days in intensive care.

St Asaph-born Rush, aged 64, who is an ambassador for Liverpool, has responded to treatment but remains in hospital.

A Liverpool FC spokesman thanked the hospital for “providing the best care possible for our legend and ambassador of the club”, adding of the 64-year-old: “Everyone at Liverpool wishes him a speedy recovery.”

Rush is Liverpool’s record goalscorer, registering 346 goals in 660 appearances across two spells.

He won five league titles and two European Cups, among other honours, after signing as a teenager from Chester in 1980. He scored in three FA Cup final victories for the Reds.

Rush was capped 73 times for Wales, with his first coming just before he joined Liverpool in 1980. He was the country's leading scorer with 28 international goals until that record was overtaken by Gareth Bale in 2018. He also had a spell at Wrexham at the end of his career.

After retirement, Rush moved into management and had an eight-month spell in charge of Chester.

He was made an MBE in 1996, and regularly attends matches at Anfield in his role as a club ambassador.

It comes amid a surge in flu cases across the country - with NHS figures last week showing hospital cases are at a record high for this time of year.
