Dejan Lovren takes fresh swipe at Jamie Carragher after controversial Mohamed Salah comments

Former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has taken another swipe at Jamie Carragher following the pundit’s criticism of Mohamed Salah earlier last week. Carragher sparked backlash after an extended rant aimed at Salah following the Egyptian’s explosive interview after the draw with Leeds United.

The ex-England centre-back said: “The line that stands out for me is ‘thrown under the bus’. He’s tried to throw the club under the bus twice in the last 12 months with the situations just mentioned. Going after the owners initially, and these are owners who have been paying him hundreds of thousands of pounds for six years, he complained a year ago because they hadn’t given him a new contract at the age of 32.

“The club are more than entitled to do that. With the manager right now, Salah should be doing as much as he can now to try and help the club get out of the worst run of results they’ve had since the 1950s, and he hasn’t done that. But when I’ve thought about it over the weekend and I’ve put myself in Salah’s position or how I was as a player, I’m not Mo Salah.

“Salah is a player who is famous all around the world, and should those players be treated differently? I think they should. When you think of the players in that bracket over the last eight years, Messi, Ronaldo and Mbappe. I wouldn’t put Salah alongside them but he’s very close for what he’s done for Liverpool. He’s a legendary figure and all those players get a privilege.

“Exactly the same one as Salah gets at Liverpool and that’s he doesn’t have to defend. he doesn’t have to chase back. That’s what he has at Liverpool, but when we are talking about throwing people under the bus, he’s thrown Liverpool right back under the bus for eight years. Imagine playing behind him for eight years.

Lovren, a close friend and former team-mate of Salah, has been one of his most vocal defenders throughout the fallout. Lovren returned to social media on Monday after Salah set up Hugo Ekitike against Brighton to break the Premier League record for most goal contributions for a single club, reaching 277 for Liverpool. Reposting the milestone on X, Lovren added a sarcastic caption seemingly aimed at Carragher: “Not good enough Mo. You need to cover your full back.”
