Inter Miami signs ex-Real Madrid, Tottenham defender Reguilon to replace Alba

Inter Miami, fresh off its first MLS Cup title, has begun rebuilding for the 2026 season.

The club announced on Monday that it signed Spanish left back Sergio Reguilon through December 2027, with an extension option until December 2028.

Reguilon, a 28-year-old free agent, previously played for Tottenham and Real Madrid and will add experience and depth to the left back position after the retirement of the legendary Jordi Alba.

He will occupy an international roster spot.

“Inter Miami is an amazing project, it’s a winning team, and I’m a winning man, so for me that’s so important,” Reguilon said. “I’m not going to lie, coming here to play with Leo [Messi] is extra motivation. I’m so hungry to compete. I’m so happy to be here, and I just want to do the best for the team. My last months have not been so good for me in terms of football and personally, so now I have an opportunity to show people my football. I’m so excited to start.”

During the course of his career, the defender has made more than 260 appearances, with 81 in the Premier League and 56 in LaLiga. He also played six games for the Spanish national team, including three appearances in the UEFA Nations League in 2020 and a FIFA World Cup qualifier in 2021.

Born in Madrid, Reguilon began his career in the youth ranks of Real Madrid, spending 10 years progressing through the club’s academy before moving on loan to Segunda División B side UD Logroñés for the 2015/16 season.

He returned to Real Madrid in 2016, where he featured for Real Madrid Castilla before earning his first-team debut in October 2018 in the UEFA Champions League. One month later, he made his LaLiga debut, and later that season was part of the squad that lifted Real Madrid’s fourth FIFA Club World Cup title.

He then joined Sevilla on loan for the 2019-20 season. During his time with Los Rojiblancos, he helped lift the UEFA Europa League trophy.

Reguilon then moved to England with Tottenham Hotspur, where he spent two seasons before continuing his European career on loan with Atlético de Madrid. He went on to go on loan with Manchester United and Brentford FC before returning to Tottenham in May 2024.

He played only 316 minutes in the 2024-25 season and Tottenham did not retain him for this season. He is seeking to regain the level he enjoyed in La Liga and seems a good fit for Inter Miami with the departure of Alba.

The 2026 MLS preseason camp kicks off the second week of January and plans for Inter Miami preseason matches in South America are being finalized (Colombia and Ecuador are reportedly on the itinerary).

Inter Miami opens the 2026 MLS season on the road Feb. 21 at Los Angeles FC and will play the first five games away from home while construction of Miami Freedom Park Stadium is completed. The first home game in the new stadium is Apr. 4 against Austin FC.

“The stadium was the first thing I saw when I landed at the airport, I have seen drawings of the plans and I can’t wait to play there,” Reguilon said.

In mid-March, Inter Miami will compete in the Concacaf Champions Cup. The team got a bye to the Round of 16 and will play at Nashville SC or Atletico Ottawa on March 11 in the first leg and return to Chase Stadium for the second leg March 18.
