Saturday’s match v Wolves was hardly a masterpiece performance by the Gunners. Instead, the game was extremely worrisome until stoppage time at the end of the 90 minutes when Wolves defender Yerson Mosquera deflected one to the back of the net off a Gabriel Jesus strike to give Arsenal the win.
Yes, 3 points is 3 points, however, this was a match the Gunners should have had little trouble wining by a much larger margin. Except for Wolves lone goal, the Gunners defense was tight allowing the visitors only two shots on goal the entire match. David Raya added two terrific saves as well.
Offensively, the Wolves five-man backline kept Arsenal from creating many chances as Mikel Arteta’s team had only two shots on goal themselves.
Bukayo Saka was absolutely brilliant on Saturday creating numerous chances inside the box for teammates, however, nothing ultimately seemed to work. Timing was off, runs were too late, plus players missed several easy shots.
Should we be disappointed with the performance of Viktor Gyokeres at this point of the season. The Swedish star has scored only six Arsenal goals in all competitions. Of course, he did miss a few matches with an injury, but something just isn’t clicking for the big striker. At least not yet. Arteta still has faith in his big dollar signing, but he also has a healthy Gabriel Jesus, and a soon-to-be-ready Kai Havertz waiting in the wings if Gyokeres continues to struggle scoring goals. Mikel Merino has also done a nice job as the club’s center forward.
And, let’s not forget, the title race has gotten a lot closer with Man City only two points behind the Gunners.
Now, for Arsenal to get back on track, and return to their November level of performance, Arteta needs players to get fit and stay fit, for strikers to score more goals, and for the midfield’s magic to return.
Off to Everton this weekend, and hopefully we will witness a superb performance.
