Jamie Carragher has made a scary prediction for Enzo Maresca after the Chelsea manager said something strange about having his “worst 48 hours” at the club. After the 2-0 home win over Everton on Saturday, the Italian head coach made inflammatory comments, saying that people weren’t supporting him and his players.
Chelsea won against the Toffees, ending a four-game losing streak in all competitions and moving back up to fourth place in the Premier League. Maresca shocked reporters by letting out his anger instead of celebrating the win. The Blues manager has since refused to explain what he meant or who he was talking to, but he did say that he wasn’t talking about the fans.
When Carragher talked about the situation on Monday Night Football, he didn’t hold back:
“It’s not uncertain. He’s speaking about the owners and the sporting directors. I think this is a classic case that you see at a lot of clubs now, where you have a head coach – not a manager – and sporting directors.
“And what you get is, the coach comes in initially and agrees to the terms and conditions, but then he feels like he’s done a really great job.”
The former England defender further added:
“I don’t think Enzo Maresca is manager at Chelsea next season. I think when you come out and speak like your ownership like that, and you start going public, that’s a big problem. I don’t see him being there next season.”
Maresca smiled at the start of his press conference on Monday, knowing that the Blues boss would ask him about what he said. However, he kept shutting down questions and refused to go into more detail.
Chelsea’s history with managers since BlueCo took over
Chelsea have fired five managers in the last two years while Clearlake Capital and Todd Boehly have owned the team. People are worried about how stable the management is at Stamford Bridge because the west London club is quick to fire coaches.
In September 2022, Thomas Tuchel was fired six days after Chelsea signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at his request. Tuchel had already won the Champions League with Chelsea. Graham Potter came from Brighton, but he was fired in April 2023, after just seven months.
Frank Lampard came back as caretaker manager, but he only won one of the 11 games he managed. In July 2023, Mauricio Pochettino took over but only lasted one season before Maresca took over, even though Poch led the Blues to European qualification.
