Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs recently did something only one other team in the NBA has managed this season. They beat the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder have been spectacular to start the 2025-26 campaign, and Victor Wembanyama had a big compliment for them despite winning the game.
The Thunder are the reigning champions, and at the moment, they look set to repeat their success. However, Wemby and the Spurs ensured they wouldn’t win the NBA Cup this season. After beating OKC in the semifinals, the Frenchman was asked about a budding rivalry.

“I think we’re not quite there yet, but it’s a good sign that people see it’s possible,” Wembanyama said. “It’s not like we’re the second seed right now.
“And I don’t think anybody right now can claim to have a rivalry with them in the league. They’re in their own tier. But in the future, if we reach that level, it would be great to have a rivalry.”

For an opponent like Wemby to admit that there is no rivalry between them yet is the ultimate compliment. Especially considering that the Spurs did just beat the Thunder. It also shows how humble and focused Wemby remains. It may not be a direct rivalry now, but it’s also not as far off as some fans might imagine.
