'Only' reason for Mohamed Salah leaving Liverpool in January transfer window named by journalist

Mohamed Salah made his Liverpool return in the 2-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.

Salah was dropped by Arne Slot early last week when the Reds travelled to the San Siro for a Champions League meeting with Inter Milan.

The Liverpool forward was left at home for that clash, but after conversations with Slot, he was selected on the bench against Brighton.

An injury to Joe Gomez saw the 33-year-old make an unexpected first-half appearance in Saturday’s tie, in which he played well and provided an assist for Hugo Ekitike.

However, despite featuring against the Seagulls, question marks over the Egyptian’s long-term future remain.

Why Liverpool could let Mohamed Salah leave in January

Salah is under contract at Anfield until 2027, but whether he stays at the club beyond the next two transfer windows remains to be seen.

Journalist James Pearce has commented on the forward’s future on the Walk On podcast this week.

He suggested that the situation should be revisited in the summer amid Liverpool’s stance on wanting to keep their star player.

However, he went on to say the only reason that could change is if Salah pushes hard for a January move.

He said: “You’d like to think that common sense would dictate that everyone just agrees that Salah stays at Liverpool until the end of the season, and it’s reviewed come the summer.

“But I think certainly the ball is very much in Salah’s court in terms of Liverpool are adamant they don’t want to lose him, so that is only going to change in January if he pushes hard for a move.”

Antoine Semenyo to Liverpool latest

If and when Salah eventually leaves Liverpool, he will need to be replaced in the squad.

One name who keeps being linked with the Reds of late is Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo.

Fabrizio Romano recently gave an update on a potential move for Semenyo when speaking to GiveMeSport.

He said: “Genuine interest [from Liverpool] but there are more clubs also keen. It’s going to be a race also with more sides, depending on what the player wants to do.”

Semenyo has seven goals and three assists in 15 Premier League matches this season, most recently netting in a 4-4 draw with Manchester United on Monday evening.

No Liverpool player has scored more than the Cherries ace in the top flight this term, with Ekitike also sitting on seven after his brace at the weekend.
