Jamie Carragher breaks down why Chelsea would be making a serious mistake to sack Enzo Maresca

Seemingly out of nowhere, the status of the Chelsea manager’s job security has become the topic of conversation around the club in recent days.

Enzo Maresca has taken all the headlines since the Blues snapped their winless run against Everton at the weekend, launching a rant on the club and the backing he has received.

Chelsea fans are concerned about Maresca’s situation, with his pre-match press conference before the League Cup quarter-final against Cardiff City being dominated by the ongoing scenario.

Do you think Chelsea can win the Premier League with Enzo Maresca? 👀

If not, who can bring the title back to Stamford Bridge?

Maresca clarified his relationship with the ownership was ‘okay’, although he didn’t want to squash the situation, potentially allowing this saga to continue to run.

Jamie Carragher was asked who he thought would lose more if the relationship ended, and while he admitted it would be the Italian, he told Sky Sports that Chelsea would be losing a quality tactical coach if he was to depart.

He said: “I think it’ll just be Maresca [who stands to lose more], because we are looking at Chelsea being one of the most coveted jobs I would say in European football.

“But, the one thing you can’t throw at Maresca is he’s not capable at this level. We talk about Ruben Amorim and there’s still that question mark; is he capable of coaching at the highest level against the best coaches in the Premier League, we don’t know.

“I wouldn’t say that about Maresca. When you look at his record, it’s fantastic what he’s done, because I think the squad of players that Chelsea have, they’re nowhere near competing with those top three teams.

“That’s what makes him feel confident enough to take the owners or sporting directors on, because he feels he’s done enough. I’m not sure he can do much more than that with the squad they have.”

Carragher not confident Chelsea can suitably replace Maresca

If the boss was to leave, there is talk that Chelsea have at least four managers on the shortlist to replace him, most likely at the end of the season.

However, Carragher believes there is a major risk the Blues will not get someone of his calibre, after watching what has happened at Tottenham and Manchester United.

He continued: “Chelsea as a club will feel they can go and get another manager. They could. Will he be better than Maresca? Maybe, but when you look at what’s gone on at Spurs and Man United, you can easily go and get a manager who is not at that level.

“Maresca can go up against any manager as he’s proved, whether it’s Pep Guardiola, Arne Slot, he’s more than capable tactically. A top coach.”

Immediate poor results from now are likely not going to make an impact on his place at the club, but Maresca must beat League One Cardiff tonight to weather the storm for now.
