December 16 – FC Barcelona have discontinued operations at their Hong Kong commercial office, 13 years after becoming the club’s first overseas branch in 2013.

According to sources cited by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, the club referenced a need to optimise resources and improve operational efficiency in the Asia-Pacific market, where the club estimate there are 247 million fans – the largest Barça community in the world.

Following a thorough analysis, the club determined that activities in the Hong Kong office could be outsourced without affecting quality or service.

Barcelona, will, however, maintain their presences in the Asia-Pacific market through their nine Barça Academies and eight official partnership agreements while social media and digital platforms continue to inform fans.

Barça will also maintain their commercial office in the United States, which recently relocated to Miami in Florida – with FIFA also headquartered there.

Following years of financial uncertainty, Barcelona announced in October that their commercial figures showcased economic recovery, with the club’s ongoing renovation of the Camp Nou set to further boost the coffers when it is fully operational.

The club stated at the announcement of their financial situation that “sponsorships and merchandising have reached record figures, consolidating the Club’s international projection.”

It will take time to discover what, if any, the effect of closing their Hong Kong office will have on their economic standing in the Asia-Pacific region.
