GLENDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — A Valley artist has given new life to a mural that went quickly outdated with the departure of Kevin Durant from the Phoenix Suns.
The mural at 56th and Glendale avenues previously portrayed Devin Booker and Durant, who left for Houston this past offseason.
Now the artist behind the mural, Johnny Morales, returned to give a refresh to the wall art.
“I feel like every year I want to throw a new piece for the Phoenix Suns, and this year was exciting because we have a new squad, excited, hungry,” Morales said. “So I was hungry to put a piece up there, man.”
Not only does the new design feature current and past Suns stars Devin Booker and Charles Barkley, it also features other Arizona sports legends Randy Johnson, Luis Gonzales, Kurt Warner, Larry Fitzgerald and Diana Taurasi.
Morales said narrowing the choices down to just those stars was difficult.
“I was up all night coming up with different mock-ups because we have so many such good players here,” he said. “A lot of them that we need to give their flowers to. They made a huge, huge run for us ... So we went with this last mock-up that the City of Glendale voted on.”
He said the mural took him about a month to complete after it was approved by city leaders. He hopes it can remain a fixture in the area for years to come.
Morales said he’s a big Suns fan and can’t wait to keep cheering on this new team.
“Anything I can do to give back to the community, to our fan base, you know, I’m here for you,” he said.
