Luis Garcia says Liverpool sold an underrated player who 'gave so much' to them

Luis Garcia enjoyed some truly memorable moments during his time as a Liverpool player in the 2000s.

The Spaniard moved to Anfield during the summer of 2004, signing from FC Barcelona.

Garcia played with some iconic names during his time as a Red, including Xabi Alonso and Steven Gerrard, the former of whom has been linked with the Liverpool job in the last month.

The trio played a key role in Liverpool’s 2004/05 Champions League final success at AC Milan.

But there is another player from that team whom Garcia doesn’t believe gets the credit he deserves.

Gerrard and Alonso both scored in the showpiece, while Garcia started as a right-sided midfielder.

Behind the former Atletico Madrid man was Irish full-back Steve Finnan.

Now, speaking to Amazon for their TikTok account this week, the ex-Liverpool ace selected Finnan when asked to name the most underrated player.

He said: “I’m going to go with Steve Finnan.

“I think he was a player who gave us so much during that campaign, 2004/2005. He was fantastic on the right side as a full-back.

“But used to go forward many times, fantastic crosses, was very difficult to beat in a one-on-one situation, was quick, was strong.”

Finnan joined Liverpool in 2003 from fellow Premier League side Fulham, going on to make 217 appearances, score one goal, and provide 20 assists.

Three years on from the Reds’ triumph over AC Milan, the right-back joined Spanish side Espanyol for an undisclosed fee.

However, he only made five appearances for the European outfit before joining Portsmouth on a free transfer a year later.

Finnan spent just over 12 months on the South Coast before calling time on his playing career in 2010.
