Although the two didn't step out for the Met Gala, they made their red carpet debut days later in Rome
Timothée Chalamet's absence from this year's Met Gala hasn't exactly been a complete unknown. But now, he's defending himself even further for skipping the big event, despite what fans anticipated to be a major date night with his girlfriend, Kylie Jenner.
Appearing on the 7PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony podcast, Chalamet, 29, said he was too "locked in" supporting the New York Knicks this spring to attend fashion's biggest night.
"That Knicks run last year, I think that was the most fun period of my life. Those four months, I’m not even kidding. Just the Garden being electric," explained the Marty Supreme actor, who on the night of the Met Gala on May 5, posted a screenshot of himself watching the Knicks match against the Boston Celtics.

As for Jenner? She returned to the star-studded gala in a custom waist-cinching Ferragamo gown inspired by the night's “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" theme and "Tailored for You" dress code. And the cosmetics mogul, 28, was even in good company thanks to sisters Kendall Jenner and Kim Kardashian being there too. But there have been plenty of moments when Jenner has supported her love's passion for basketball courtside (they attended a Madison Square Garden match on May 12).
Anyone rooting for the couple, who've been linked since 2023, would've hoped that the Met Gala would mark their big red carpet debut. After all, the pair spent a part of this year's awards season run stepping out in style — from their steamy appearance at the Oscars to their coordinating moment at the BAFTAs.
But it was only days after the Met Gala that the two decided to officially walk a carpet together at the 70th David Di Donatello Awards on May 7, which saw them clad in monochromatic looks.

Chalamet and Jenner this month made an even bigger splash when they attended the Dec. 8 premiere ofMarty Supreme in Los Angeles. The two took up method dressing in their orange Chrome Hearts ensembles, which included a leather suit and ping-pong paddle bag for him and a figure-hugging dress for her.
Jenner's family and friends have also tapped into the hype of Chalamet's new movie. The most notable support came from Kris Jenner, who proved her stamp of approval on her youngest's relationship by repping themed Marty Supreme merch on Instagram.
