Luis Suarez played a key role for Inter Miami in the 2025 Major League Soccer (MLS) season, starting 27 of 28 regular-season games and recording 10 goals and 10 assists. However, he accepted a reduced role during the final four playoff games. He sat out entirely in the MLS Cup final 3-1 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps. Suarez, in the final year of his contract, has not publicly confirmed whether he plans to retire or extend his career.
Team managing owner Jorge Mas stated that Suarez could decide whether to retire or continue, with a potential return requiring discussions about his role. “Luis Suarez is a legend of football, he is one of the best nines not only of this generation but of all time,” Mas told reporters. “Luis will have to make a decision when the season is over, so tomorrow. Luis deserves to be able to make that decision to be able to leave through the front door and be celebrated like he should be by the club. And if he decides to stay at the club for another year, it would be great. I would like to see Suarez stay.”
The Uruguayan joined Inter Miami ahead of the 2025 season, reuniting with former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets. Suarez started his career at Nacional in 2005 before moving to Europe, featuring for FC Groningen and Ajax, then joining Liverpool. After a record-breaking 2013-14 season in England where he scored 31 league goals in his final season at Anfield, he transferred to Barcelona.
He helped Barca win four La Liga titles and one Champions League, scoring 195 goals and providing 113 assists in 283 appearances. He later won another La Liga title with Atletico Madrid, returned to Nacional for half a season to win a title, and played for Gremio, where he was named Player of the Year in 2023.
Despite the MLS Cup being the final game for Alba and Busquets, Suarez was not ready to retire. Rumors suggested he might return to Nacional for a farewell season, but according to the Miami Herald, he is finalising a contract to return to Inter Miami for the 2026 season. He is set to team up with Messi for one final campaign.
